Frequently Asked Questions
-
Any river, fishing, hunting, ski. climbing, mountaineering, backpacking, mountain biking, or scenic guide working in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming or Colorado qualifies.
For Idaho guides, your guide license # is all we need. For guides in other states - the name of your outfitter , how many years you’ve been guiding, and any certification you hold help us qualify you as a professional guide.
-
Ski Patrollers, Ski Instructors, Outdoor Educators, Search and Rescue, Military, or Firefighters.
-
No. Its ok if you are between seasons!
For example if you are ski patrolling in the winter, but are a climbing guide in the summer, you are still eligible for our services.
-
We are currently not accepting any new therapists to our network.
However, that can change at any time and if you are interested in being part of our network, Please send your resume, a letter of intent, and what states you are licensed in.
What’s important to us:
A background in guiding, being licensed in multiple states, and having time/space for our guides in need.
-
Call or text anytime 24/7. A licensed therapist (who is also a guide) will get to you as soon as possible- often within a couple of hours, but it may take up to 48 hours. The Case Manager will gather some general information and briefly review your reason for reaching out. The case manager will then connect you with a therapist in our network of providers - one who is good fit for you and who already understands the guide lifestyle.
Redside Foundation will fund up to eight sessions of counseling. The whole process is confidential and cost-free, thanks to our generous donors.
-
When you reach out to our Guide Helpline, you'll connect with our case manager who is a professional, licensed therapist (who is familiar with the guiding lifestyle) who will:
Listen in a judgment-free, confidential space
Ask a few questions to understand what you might be struggling with
Match you with a licensed therapist in our network based on your needs, preferences, and location
Our network of therapists all already understand the guide lifestyle so you can get right to work.
Provide you with your therapist's contact information.
Then it is up to you to make an appointment and start getting the support you deserve.
You won't need to navigate insurance, search directories, or make dozens of calls. We handle the hard part so you can focus on getting help.
-
Finding the right therapist is crucial to your healing. If your first match doesn't feel right, that's completely okay.
Here's what to do:
Call/text the Helpline again
Let us know it's not a good fit
We'll match you with a new therapist.
There's absolutely no judgment or penalty
Therapy is personal. We're committed to helping you find someone you trust and feel comfortable with.
-
If you don't schedule or even contact your therapist
You can still call the Guide Helpline again anytime
Please reach back out the helpline for next steps. Ideally, we’ll pair you with your original provider again, but if they are unavailable, you will receive a different referral.
All RSF resources remain open to you
We're here when you're ready. Mental health journeys don't follow perfect timelines.
-
Absolutely. You can reach out to the Guide Helpline:
For different concerns or life challenges
If you need a different therapist
Just to ask questions or get guidance
If you and your therapist believe that eight sessions is not enough, both you and your therapist will need to communicate with us and we may OK additional sessions.
-
We evaluate these requests on a case-by-case basis.
To qualify, the therapist must:
Be fully licensed in your state
Agree to our partnership terms and confidentiality standards
Have availability and appropriate expertise for your needs
[Complete our network vetting process - if applicable]
To request coverage: Contact our Case Manager through the Guide Helpline to go over next steps to get your therapist set up to receive your Redside funding.
While we prioritize our existing network to ensure quality and consistency, we understand that an established therapeutic relationship is valuable.
-
Yes, in many cases! Here's how it works:
If your therapist accepts insurance:
You can use your insurance as primary payment
RSF can help cover copays, deductibles, or sessions after your insurance limit.
This allows us to stretch your support further.
If your therapist doesn't accept your insurance:
RSF covers the cost directly for 8 sessions.
You may be able to submit out-of-network claims to your insurance for reimbursement.Your provider will help you provide this documentation.
If you don't have insurance:
RSF covers the full cost for 8 sessions
Your Case Manager will help you understand your specific situation and maximize available resources.
-
Any outdoor professional guide in Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, or Colorado can call or text the Guide Helpline.
You don't need to:
Prove financial hardship
Have a formal diagnosis
Be in crisis (we support all levels of mental health needs)
If you're not sure you qualify, call us anyway. We'll help you figure it out or try to connect you with resources that fit.
-
Nope. No waitlist. We typically match clients with therapists within 1-3 business days of contacting the Guide Helpline. However, scheduling of your sessions will rely on schedule alignment between you and your therapist.
-
Yes. We follow strict HIPAA and ethical guidelines.
What we keep private:
That you contacted Redside Foundation
Your personal information and what you share with the Redside Case Manager.
Your therapy sessions (confidential between you and your therapist)
The only exceptions are the standard limits to confidentiality in therapy:
Risk of harm to yourself or others
Suspected child or elder abuse
Court orders (extremely rare)
Your therapist will explain these limits during your first session.
-
Not unless you tell them. We don't contact family, employers, or anyone else without your explicit request and permission.
You're in control of who knows about your mental health care.
-
We do not share any specific or identifying information with your provider prior to you contacting them to set up an appointment. It is up to you to introduce yourself to your provider and to initiate therapy.
Your therapy sessions themselves are confidential between you and your therapist.
-
In most cases, no. Reaching out for support is a courageous first step, and once you’ve been connected with a therapist, the next steps are in your hands. You are not required to report back to us, and we respect your autonomy in deciding how and when to engage in care.
That said, there are some situations where we may follow up. If you share that you are experiencing active suicidal thoughts, self-harm, immediate safety concerns, or other high-risk circumstances, we may check back in to ensure you are safe and connected to appropriate support. Our goal in those moments is not to monitor you, but to care for your well-being.
If at any time you would like additional help, need a new referral, or simply want to reconnect, we are always here.Additionally, your feedback about your experience is always appreciated. If you are comfortable with your story being shared with our supporters (can be anonymous), please let us know.
-
Yes — you are always welcome to call the helpline if you’re concerned about someone.
While we cannot enroll someone in services or connect them with a therapist without their knowledge and consent, we can absolutely support you in figuring out next steps. We can talk through what you’re noticing, help you think about how to approach the conversation, provide language you might use, and offer guidance on available resources.
If the person you’re concerned about is open to it, they need to call or text the Guide Helpline themselves as that is the way to establish consent for care.
If there is an immediate safety concern — such as risk of suicide or harm to others — we will guide you toward appropriate crisis resources in your area. Alternatively, we recommend calling 988 - the national suicide and crisis hotline.
Supporting someone who may be struggling can feel heavy. You don’t have to navigate that alone.
-
You can simply say something like: “This is XXXXX. I am a guide in XXXXX. I’d like to talk to someone- OR - I’d like to get started with some counseling. My number is XXX-XXX-XXXX. The best time to reach me is XXXX.
-
We suggest emailing them to introduce yourself: “Hi, Redside Foundation gave me your contact information to get started with counseling. My phone number is XXX-XXX-XXXX or you can email me. The best times for me to connect to discuss next steps is XXXX. Thank you, XXXXXX”

Education assistance for Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado guides
The Redside Foundation offers four Guide Scholarships.
One Telly Evans Memorial Scholarship at the University of Idaho for an Idaho Guide.
Four Redside Foundation Guide Scholarships are awarded to four guides attending any accredited college, university, trade, or professional school in the U.S. Guides must work in Idaho, Montana, Wyoming or Colorado.
Scholarships are $1000 each.
We believe guides invest in others every day. This scholarship is one way we invest back in you.
-
If you are guiding within the year you are applying, you are qualified to apply for a scholarship.
-
We do require the name of your outfitter(s), owner/manager, email address, phone number, and mailing address. If the education committee has questions, they may reach out to verify your employment during the year of application.
-
It means that you must guide in one of those states, even if your primary residence in another state. For example, if you spend your winters in Utah, but you are a river guide in Idaho during the summer- you work in one of those states.
-
If your first year/season was not a training year, yes.
-
Any college, university, or trade school that has recognition from an accrediting agency—meaning an institution maintains a certain level of educational standards.
-
No. We also offer Professional Development Grants for certifications and courses that can advance or enhance your guiding career, begin guiding in another discipline, or help you achieve guiding-adjacent off-season work such as a seasonal EMT.
-
Yes. If you are pursuing a Post-Graduate degree, you may apply for a scholarship.
-
No. You must be enrolled as a full-time student for the whole academic year.
-
Each year, an ad-hoc committee is assembled to review the Redside Guide Scholarship applications based on a matrix of scoring considerations such as a complete application, quality of letters of recommendation, quality of essay, additional info provided, and whether you’ve applied or were awarded a scholarship in the past.
For the Telly Evans Memorial Scholarship thats awarded to an Idaho guide attending the University of Idaho, the U of I Financial Aid office reviews the applications and chooses an awardee based on financial need first and merit second.
We work with your school’s financial aid office and send scholarship funds directly to them. They then apply the scholarship funds equally to the tuition of each term of your academic year.
-
You can apply in future years. If you have been awarded a scholarship through Redside Foundation in the past, that will be part of the consideration of the committee reviewing applications. If you’ve applied and were not awarded a scholarship, that will also be taken into consideration.
-
It is both.
For the Telly Evan Memorial Scholarship, The University of Idaho has the final say as to who is awarded this scholarship and need is a big consideration.
For the Redside Guide Scholarship, the quality of the application is taken into equal consideration with need.
-
The application period is open from August 1st to October 15th each year. The ad-hoc committee that reviews applications completes their review and scoring by November 1st.
Applicants are notified immediately and checks get sent to schools as soon as possible after that.
-
Yes. If this is something you want to do, please get in touch: info@redsidefoundation.org.

In Idaho, we also offer a $100 Health Care voucher that can be used at various clinics and hospitals throughout Idaho, often in conjunction with a sliding scale.

Each year it can be a little different, but you can count on getting vitals checked, basic bloodwork, immunizations such as Tetanus and HPV, skin cancer checks, STD testing, and we often also have physical therapists, massage therapists, chiropractors, and more.
Reminder: to take full advantage, its important to show up fasted (nothing to eat or drink other than water) for 10-12 hours. Best to plan accordingly.
-
They can be used for any service that the providers listed provide. See https://www.redsidefoundation.org/health-providers-voucher to learn more and request a voucher.
You must be a licensed Idaho Guide to receive a voucher.

At this time, the $100 health voucher is designated for Idaho guides. We are evaluating regional expansion based on demand, funding, and partnerships. If you’re outside Idaho and interested in offering a reduced rate + accepting a voucher, please let us know so we can gauge potential future plans.
