Tour Guide - American Southwest

Southwest Adventure Tours (SWAT) is looking for passionate and knowledgeable Tour Guides to lead unforgettable journeys through the American West. As a SWAT Guide, you’ll do more than just drive and lead hikes — you’ll create immersive experiences, connecting guests to the landscapes, history, and culture of the region. This role combines adventure, storytelling, and hospitality. You’ll be the face of SWAT, ensuring tours run smoothly, safely, and memorably, while representing our mission, values, and standards in every interaction. If you love the outdoors, enjoy working with people, and thrive in dynamic, hands-on environments, this role is your chance to turn passion into profession.

  • Guide and manage SWAT tours throughout the U.S. in a professional, safe, and engaging manner.

  • Prepare thoroughly for each tour, including confirming logistics (lodging, meals, activities) 24 hours before departure.

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of geology, history, wildlife, photography, and cultural heritage of the Southwest.

  • Complete all trip reports, including detailed timing, guest experiences, receipts, and photographs.

  • Capture a minimum of 5 photographs per day and upload them nightly; share with Operations for marketing and archival purposes.

  • Ensure DOT compliance, including daily ELD logs, inspections, and medical certification.

  • Maintain CPR/First Aid certification; obtain additional training (e.g., Wilderness First Responder) if requested by employer.

  • Correctly use and care for company property (vehicles, credit cards, equipment).

  • Promote SWAT on social media once per tour and encourage guest engagement.

  • Adhere to company dress and appearance standards.

  • Uphold SWAT’s Mission Statement, Core Values, and Brand Standards in all guest interactions

Requirements

  • Minimum age: 21 years old.

  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record (1 or fewer tickets).

  • DOT Medical Certificate (if driving multi-passenger vehicles).

  • Current First Aid/CPR certification (required).

  • Ability to lift and carry equipment, lead hikes, and handle long working days.

  • Strong interpersonal and storytelling skills.

  • Flexible schedule, including weekends and peak season availability (May–October).

  • Must be able to work independently and manage groups without direct supervision.

    Multi-Day Tours: Starting at $250.00 per full day (7+ hours), $125.00 per half day (under 7 hours).

    Shuttle Driving (non-guiding): Starting at $200.00 per full day, $100.00 per half day.

    Travel/positioning days: $175.00 per day.

    Prep work: $20.00 per hour (max 4 hours per tour, pre and post).

    Paid training: $7.50/hour or federal minimum wage, whichever is greater.

River Guide - Maupin, Or and Riggins ID

In the heart of wild rivers, healing begins. At Life Expanding Adventure Program (LEAP), we believe that nature has the power to transform lives. Since 2010, LEAP, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, has provided no-cost, multi-day immersive wilderness inflatable kayaking and rafting programs for individuals who have experienced trauma and adversity. Through the rush of whitewater and the quiet of canyon nights, participants discover strength, connection, and a renewed sense of self and possibility. LEAP partners with Greater Portland area nonprofit organizations at no cost, expanding their missions to reach those who need the healing power of nature. Through immersive wilderness experiences, LEAP serves burn survivors, unhoused youth, children facing serious illnesses like cancer, military veterans, families escaping domestic violence, neurodivergent youth, and others. About the Role

LEAP is seeking River Guides to support programs on the Lower Salmon River (ID) and the Lower Deschutes River (OR). LEAP programs are immersive, multi-day programs that use whitewater, inflatable-kayaks, and time in nature to create life-expanding opportunities for participants. Guides are expected to row rafts, guide groups in inflatable kayaks, navigate class II-IV whitewater, rig boats, pack food, set up camp, and learn all aspects of our operation. Guides work collaboratively with fellow guides, the program director, and program partners to ensure programs run smoothly and align with LEAP’s mission and values.

Beyond the expectations of a traditional guiding role, LEAP guides also work to foster a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment, using trauma-informed approaches and strong risk-management skills. Guides are responsible for participant safety, supporting group facilitation, and contributing to the overall quality of each program.

Key Responsibilities

● Create safe, inclusive, mission-driven outdoor experiences.

● Safely guide participants through Class II-IV whitewater with rafts and inflatable kayaks.

● Set up and break down camp, rig boats, and prepare group meals.

● Operate an outboard motor.

● Guide with a trauma-informed, participant-centered approach.

● Prioritize physical and emotional safety at all times.

● Collaborate and communicate effectively with fellow guides and partners.

● Practice Leave No Trace and environmental stewardship.

● Share place-based natural and cultural knowledge.

Minimum Qualifications

● 18+ years old (21+ preferred).

● Ability to work a physical job for up to 3 months with minimal time off.

● Interest in working with youth and people from diverse backgrounds.

● Familiarity with multi-day outdoor experiences.

● Able to lift 50 lbs and perform physically demanding work.

● Able to follow a zero-substance-use policy while working.

● Available for pre-season training in Idaho and Oregon.

● Current WFR/WFA & CPR certifications (or ability to obtain).

Facilitator - Maupin, OR and Riggins, ID

LEAP (Life Expanding Adventure Program) is seeking a Group Facilitator to support immersive, multi-day wilderness programs on the Lower Salmon River (ID) and the Lower Deschutes River (OR). The Group Facilitator leads the relational and therapeutic aspects of each program, including games, activities, and meaningful discussions that deepen participants’ experiences. The facilitator creates a safe, supportive, and inclusive environment by leading a structured and intentional circle process that supports group cohesion, reflection, and integration. The facilitator works to help participants translate their experience on the river into lasting personal and relational growth. This position is well suited for graduate students seeking internship or field experience in outdoor education, experiential learning, wilderness therapy, or related fields, as well as individuals with experience in group facilitation, youth work, or community-based programs. Prior river experience or wilderness medicine training is welcomed but not required. Applicants with prior river experience may have opportunities to support on-river logistics in collaboration with guide staff.

Key Responsibilities

● Serve as the primary point person for participant needs and overall group care.

● Develop and adapt facilitation plans tailored to each program's goals and needs.

● Support healthy group formation and address conflicts with support of partner staff.

● Lead multi-day trauma-informed circle process that supports group cohesion, reflection, and integration.

● Support participant wellness and needs throughout the day as needed.

● Guide games, activities, and experiences that meet the group’s needs throughout the program.

● Work closely, meet, and collaborate with program staff before evening and morning circle to determine group needs.

● Assist with camp tasks as needed, including kitchen help and setting up tarps or tents.

Education Coordinator, Coloma, CA

Salary Range: $20-$24/hour, DOE

Reports to: Education Program Manager

Type of Position: Part-time, hourly (32 hours per week); Non-exempt

The American River Conservancy is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving our community by ensuring healthy ecosystems within the Upper American and upper Cosumnes River Watersheds through land conservation, stewardship and education. Position Summary: The Education Coordinator participates in and leads outdoor education activities for participants of all ages at Wakamatsu Farm and other locations throughout El Dorado County. The Education Coordinator also coordinates volunteer trainings, delivers programs, and develops outdoor education curricula.

Essential Duties:

• Coordinates and leads outdoor education programs and activities as part of ARC’s education program, including field trips, homeschool programs, nature bowl, and nature camp.

• Manage scheduling, communications, and invoicing for school field trips, in coordination with Accounting Specialist and Education Program Manager.

• Coordinates California Naturalist Certification Course and Climate Stewards Certification Courses at ARC.

• Coordinates and trains volunteers for education programs.

• Communicates with ARC staff and attends staff meetings (twice per month) and other ARC-related events as needed.

• Contributes social media content (Facebook, Instagram) on behalf of Education Programs, following ARC guidelines.

Qualifications:

Knowledge and experience working with people of all ages to deliver environmental education programs and natural history education is required.

Ability to hike/walk on uneven terrain in rural areas is required. Great communication skills (phone, email, verbal) are required. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Google Drive, and Outlook required.

Program and event coordination experience is strongly recommended. Knowledge of local natural and cultural history is strongly desired.

Bachelor’s degree or coursework related to education and/or environmental science is desired. Initiative to jump in, work independently, and have follow-through are necessary qualities to succeed in this role.

Working Conditions: Must be able to work outside in the sun and tolerate inclement weather exposure. This type of work may expose one to encounters with poison oak, ticks and rattlesnakes. Certain aspects of the job may be performed remotely or in the field. However, many duties require close collaboration with other staff, which necessitate 2-3 days per week in the office.

Job location and Hours: The location is the American River Nature Center in Coloma and Wakamatsu Farm. There is a flexibility to work remotely if needed, subject to Manager approval. Most weeks include Education Programs that require inperson work at Wakamatsu Farm. The employee will be expected to work during normal business hours, with an understanding that there will be, on occasion, a need to participate in events and programs that occur in the evenings or weekends outside of normal business hours.

Rate of pay and Benefits: Starting pay dependent on qualifications and experience. Eleven paid holidays (9 fixed, 2 floating); accrual of vacation time (10 days) and sick leave (10 days) begin on the first day of hire; accrual rate is based on number of hours worked per week and number of years worked. Part time employees accrue vacation time each pay period at a rate which is proportional to the ratio of their hours worked to full time hours (full time = 40 hours/week). ARC will pay at least 50% and up to 75% of the cost of a qualified health plan following the completion of a 60-day waiting period. ARC may offer a retirement contribution (currently 10% of annual wages; as funding allows) which begins to accrue following one full year of employment and is dependent on budgetary constraints from year to year.

We are equipped to support early career educators and train qualified individuals to be successful high school teachers (including earning a teaching license). Teachers travel to Chile with students for 7-8 weeks each semester, and join 6-12 day expeditions in both Idaho and Chile, leading in backpacking or whitewater river expeditions.
